Life on the Life 跳躍生命線 - TVB Theme Songs Review

Hey everyone!

We're back with a post on the new theme songs for Life on the Line. We didn't find any songs that were good in September so just skipped the Pick of the Month. As for drama updates, Cee finished The Story of Yanxi Palace and Jay is currently watching it. We are both watching Another Era right now and it's pretty good for TVB standards these days and we appreciate the different location filming in HK. But enough on that, we will get into the Life on the Line songs now.

This looks like a solid drama with a strong "new" cast, we've always liked watching Matthew Ho and Moon Lau. It's been a while since we've seen Joe Ma and he's never been too special for us, in fact kinda boring and too "textbook" sometimes.

The theme song is sung by Fred Cheng. It's a solid song and fits the drama well. Other than that, the MV didn't have a lot going for it, just the usual wind blowing into face stuff haha. The band scene gave us Dear Jane vibes and we've been listening to Fred since his days competing on The Voice so we know he true calling is in a band with his guitar.

The Ending Theme song is sung by HANA. When the intro came on, we thought that it was another one of her songs because it sounds formulaic for any The Voice Ent. song.

The song is about being in love with someone who is already close with someone else. It's interesting that the MV actually has it's own story and came out before the drama too. Usually they come out months or weeks after about it's just them lip singing with wind blowing in their hair and cool backgrounds haha. Depending on the amount of times TVB plays this during the drama, we may remember the song after brainwashing but it sounds like all her other songs (Another Era Ending Theme, Deep in the Realm of Conscience Ending Theme, Stealing Seconds Ending Theme). Her voice is about the same as Jinny's so their songs also sound the same and the lyrics don't mean too much to us either unfortunately.

Johnny Yim

The sub-theme song is a remake of Lowell Lo's original song. It's definitely got a different feel. There's been a trend in The Voice Ent. in having their singers re-singing old songs. We were confused when the two songs came out at around the same time because this is the first time we've got double HANA. We like this better than the ending theme, it's different and she sounds more emotional as well.

Thanks for reading out post and let us know what you think of the songs,

  1. Hi Cee and Jay!

Great Review! I am currently watching this drama, and I find it very good! I like the performances from Joe Ma, Matthew Ho, Jeannie Chan, and Kelly Cheung. I do not really like Moon Lau in this drama because I find her voice very annoying.

This year has been a decent year for TVB dramas; I particularly enjoyed Threesome, Succession War, Who Wants A Baby and this drama. There are a lot of females this year for the Best Actress award; I am rooting for Mandy Wong for her performance in Threesome (I wish you guys can do a review on the drama). I like her performance because it is an enormous challenge (having to change her character a lot in one scene) and entertaining, I think she pulled it off very well. Ali Lee is also a big contender for the Best Actress award, but I believe that her acting is still not enough to get the award (it can be seen in her very small role in Life On The Line). That being said, I am rooting her for the character award. Selena Lee is also not bad in the Succession War, but her role is very small, and insufficient to get Best Actress. I usually do like Alice Chan, but not in Deep In The Realm Of Conscience, I find her performance is way too overrated, her use of facial expressions and voice is not good enough. Grace Wong has a leading role in OMG, Your Honour, I have high hopes for her, and i wish she can also have a chance.

As for the males, this year has been very weak; I think Joe Ma has a very big chance. Also Carlos Chan for Daddy Cool, but they are both not TVB artistes, so I think they would have a harder chance to get the award. Ben Yuen in Threesome is not bad, but I did not like his performance in Stealing Seconds and Another Era (since he is too wooden).

Overall, This year has been very good for TVB; I am very looking forward to next year.

  2. Hi Jack,

Thanks for your comment! We are currently watching Life on the Line as well, and we are enjoying it too! We thought that Matthew Ho improved tremendously, and we are enjoying the training scenes and seeing some younger faces.

It'll definitely be interesting to see the TVB awards this year, and it will be hard to choose a Best Actor this year. We definitely agree that Mandy Wong is a very strong contender (sorry we couldn't get to the a review for the drama!), and unfortunately, we did not have time to finish Who Wants a Baby? but we heard numerous praises on Ali Lee's performance. We thought that the bigger productions like Deep in the Realm of Conscience and Another Era failed to deliver in plot. It was the smaller scale productions like Daddy Cool or Who Wants a Baby? (as we've heard) that were the really enjoyable dramas this year. We are excited to see OMG, Your Honour, especially since Grace Wong hasn't been in any dramas for quite some while now.

Thanks again for your comment, and we hope to be posting some updates soon!

  3. Hi CeeJay,

Thanks for your reply! You should try to squeeze some time to do a review on Threesome! I really cannot see such an excellent drama (with an excellent script, humor, and performances) not getting any attention (since it was aired at the beginning of the year, and on a weekend timeslot) It is much better than big dramas like Deep In The Realm Of Conscience and Another Era (which got meager ratings).

I am currently watching OMG, Your Honour, but I find the storyline to be messy. Grace Wong did not appear in the first two episodes. I am very disappointed about that, because it's her first time as a female lead and I want more screen time from her so she can perform, her next drama will be The Defected, and she is only a supporting actress in that drama, this is basically her only chance to get film more dramas as a female lead.

Life On The Line started off very well, but the plot is getting more draggy, but it is expected, and it is still very entertaining. I particularly like Joe Ma, Jeannie Chan and Joey Law's performance. Since there aren't much best actor worthy performances this year, Joe Ma getting it is completely fine to me, but he is not under TVB management, Carlos Chan is my second choice for "Daddy Cool." I think Jeannie Chan and Joey Law stand a chance of getting the most improved award this year. Matthew needs to work on his voice, but overall he is doing fine.

Looking at the dramas next year, I am most anticipating "十八年後的殺人告白" which stars Mandy Wong and Shaun Tam, and "金宵大廈" which stars Selena Lee and Joel Chan. Both of them are very small productions, but I find small productions having a better script and overall a better storyline.

    1. Hello Jack!

So sorry that we have put away writing a review for Threesome for so long. It has just been super busy for the both us. We haven't even had the chance to start OMG Your Honor, just an episode of Life on the Line here and there. We're surprised that DITROC managed to pull in such high ratings on wikipedia? Looks like TVB just counted the online views or something lol.

Seems like a waste to have an awards show when not many performances are award-worthy, let alone memorable. Although we finished Another Era and didnt think it was horrible, it was really... forced? A lot of the plot was based on bad decisions and so many things could have been avoided... it was like drama for the sake of drama. Carlos Chan was definitely a breakout star this year, we can't wait to see him more.

We agree that plot is far superior to the fancy sets and costumes and think the dramas you listed look most promising.

    1. Hey Thuy,

Great news! We found the song name for the music you were wondering about from Life on the Line. It is the song "當年情" sung by Leslie Cheung which is the theme song of the movie, A Better Tomorrow (英雄本色). We came across the same instrumental piece again while watching Airport Strikers.

While we couldn't find the exact instrumental piece they used in the drama, here are a few youtube links you might like:

      Original song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SP5mykR20Ng
      Saxophone instrumental version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5DyfHdwzg34
      Harmonica instrumental version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zxyVzu1ZtWI

      Hope that helps!
