Life After Death 那些我愛過的人 TVB Theme Songs Review

Hello again,

Since we have a bit more time on our hands now, we wanted to make some more posts. We are currently enjoying the TVB series, Life After Death (那些我愛過的人) with fresh actors and pairs onscreen. With the final song by Brian Tse and Joey Thye released yesterday, we decided to bring you a theme song review for the series!

The theme song for the drama is "小謊言" sung by Shiga Lin (連詩雅). Since Shiga is the second female lead in the show, we expected a song from her. We were excited since Shiga hasn't come out with a new song for a long time. However, we noticed that the theme song was released later than the subtheme by Jinny and ending theme by Hana. As well, the other songs have music videos with actors, a story, and some outdoor scenes, whereas this MV is only inside a room. It's a shame that Jinny and Hana are so evidently favoured at The Voice Ent. because we think Shiga is definitely the better singer and the prettiest of the bunch. Unfortunately, ever since she went to the The Voice Ent., she has been given little opportunities, and the few songs she comes out with are quite boring. They are totally wasting her as a strong asset for their record company... don't know what management is thinking. We remember how many of her songs were popular, unique, and memorable when she was with Warner Music Hong Kong.

This theme song is alright, and it fits with her character's story in the show but lacks any wow factor. The MV is very low budget with a bunch of white balloons in the room that could have been done easily. Even we could buy a pack of white balloons from the dollar store and shoot the MV in our own rooms. This is a joke. The singing potential is wasted, but on the other hand, we are glad to see Shiga acting well and receiving praise in the series. Until The Voice Ent. comes up with better songs for Shiga, we will continue reminiscing her classics such as

The sub-theme song is sung by Jinny Ng (吳若希) called "沒有你並無掛念". The first lyric really caught us off guard: "苦瓜苦澀嗎" or "Is bitter melon bitter?" in English. What a random lyric, of course bitter melon is bitter. The song gets better once it hits the chorus, and after a few more listens, it does stick in your head. The curse of Jinny's brainwashing songs continues haha.
The music video seems to tell a story of this girl learning to let go of a past relationship. Jinny's placement in the video is kind of awkward—we don't know if she is looking at the girl as a bystander, if she is the girl herself, or even if she was the lover of the girl. The times for the MV are also a bit confusing going from "9 months ago" to "5 months ago" because we aren't sure which segment they are referring to. We can't expect too much these days, and maybe we should be glad that least something happens in the MV.

The second sub-theme song came out June 15th, and it is called "夢飛翔" sung by Brian Tse (謝東閔) and Joey Thye (戴祖儀). This song is probably our favourite of the set. We haven't heard a duet song for a while, and this pair was refreshing. From what we've heard so far, Joey Thye's voice is quite childish and girly, so she fits this kind of cheerful song but not really sad songs. Brian sounds pretty good here, and he should get some more songs other than Fred. The song is very motivational and inspirational, and the MV fits with the song well. Not a lot happens in the video other than the singers throwing paper airplanes and meeting each other in the end, but the scenery is nice and it's very relaxing to watch. We are looking forward to seeing this song being played for some of the scenes with the younger actors like Zeno Koo and Chloe So. TVB is in desperate need of a younger generation of actors in a young romance drama that has garnered millions of fans in South Korea, China and Taiwan. This is a good start, but perhaps they think the 'see lais' won't accept this genre during prime time.

The ending theme song sung by Hana Kuk (菊梓喬) is called "我輸不起". Like we said in our review for The Exorcist's 2nd Meter, we are frankly sick of hearing Hana sing all the ending theme songs. Looking at the list of TVB dramas that have been air din 2020 so far, we found that Hana had a song to sing for EVERY drama in the second line-up, including Legend of the PhoenixOf Greed and AntsForensic Heroes 4Airport StrikersThe Exorcist's 2nd Meter, and this one too. It has come to a point that every one of her songs sounds the same. The verses of this song sound like every other song. We are pretty sure if the beginning of the song was played, we wouldn't know which drama it belonged to. The chorus is better, so if it was played, we might be able to recognize that it was for Life After Death. We gave up watching her MVs, but for the purpose of this review we had to endure it. The MV is incredibly boring, despite the higher budget it received. They had some random scenes of Hana with this guy for most of the MV. Then, there are some shots of her singing by the window on the bed looking sad. For some reason, Hana had to reject the guy in the end, but they never show why or what happened.

Let us know what you think of the songs!

  2. Hi CeeJay!

Wow, I agree with your opinion about Shiga Lin's talent being wasted after listening to her old songs. I think she's a lot better than HANA or Jinny. But yeah, the MV was real cheap, I guess anyone could make something like this.
I did not like the sub-theme by Jinny. I like normally her songs but this song was kind of boring. It might be because of the way it was sung (a bit staccato, I think) or because I couldn't really tell the chorus apart from the rest of the song. Anyway, I think she could do better as this song wasn't her best.
Hoo boy, I LOVE the duet song by Brian Tse and Joey Thye. I was a bit surprised by how girly Joey's voice is but it served a nice contrast to Brian's deep voice. This was refreshing, considering the songs by TVB lately are either sad songs, fast songs or songs like Kayee's song in The Exorcist's 2nd Meter. I'd loop it over and over again if it wasn't a nuisance to other people.
Like you said, I think people are getting tired of Hana singing all the ending songs. What a waste of talent. I'd love to see more of Vivian Koo (after she sung the song for Barrack O'Karma), Kayee Tam, Hubert Wu, Shiga Lin or Joey Thye (though she's more suitable for cheerful songs). It's a shame The Voice is favouring Hana, Jinny and Fred (he's a good singer though) so much. About the MVs, I think Hana's default expression in MVs is being sad, which is appropriate sometimes but needs more variety. The MV was really boring, they could've put more of the budget into Shiga's song, instead of the usual MV in Hana's songs.

I've gotten bored of the usual TVB songs so I've gone on a search of Cantonese songs from elsewhere. I think Jennifer Yu is a good singer and has a nice voice though she breathes heavily when she sings sometimes and that's something to improve on. I like her duet song 天地分裂 with Cheronna Ng as it's powerful and it's one of her better songs where she doesn't breathe as heavily. I like 無得比 as well as it has a rocky feel to it. Hope you can check them out!

Back to the drama, I didn't really watch it, I just watched a few episodes here and there but I heard it was great so I might go back to it when I feel like it. I liked Shiga's chemistry with Mark Ma from what I saw of the drama as it was natural and maybe a little cute? I'm happy Shiga's getting more recognition but I'm still annoyed that it's always Fred and Hana singing the theme songs. I really hope TVB gives us more variety with both songs and dramas (there's ANOTHER cop show airing; I think it's the 4th one this year) as we're all a bit restless especially with what's going on in the world.
Sorry for this comment being way too long.

    1. It's kind of nice that there's an English blog about TVB/HK Entertainment stuff because most are in Chinese and there are less people watching TVB stuff nowadays as the quality keeps declining (for the most part) and they start airing more Mainland dramas.

    2. Hey Tacocat!

We are glad that you agreed with most of our points for this post. It's a bit unfortunate because Joey and Brian's duet doesn't actually get played much in the drama, probably because there aren't a lot of cute and happy moments in the drama except for a few. We also noticed how most of Hana's songs are sad and she looks the same for most videos. It would be nice for her to have a change in style for her songs, assuming that she will continue her ending theme song streak. Yes! We are looking forward to hearing more of Vivian Koo - her rendition of the song in BOK was very smooth and suiting for the drama. As for Fred, he has a nice voice, but lately his theme songs are very forgettable and uninteresting.

Thank you for the recommendation! We haven't actually heard any of Jennifer Yu's songs, so we will give them a listen.

We haven't finished this drama yet as we were a bit behind. Shiga and Mark did well in their characters, but our overall complaint is that the drama is too long and the end is dragged out.

Thank you for visiting us again, and we are glad we could provide a place to discuss TVB/HK dramas in English. We really appreciate the support!

    3. Hi CeeJay! Thanks for your reply and your welcome! Yup, I agree. I thought Fred's song in On Lie's Game was pretty standard for a theme song, not really that interesting but it sort of gets better when it hits the chorus. Overall, not a bad song but forgettable as I had to listen to it to remember what it sounded like. As much as I like Vivian, I have to admit her Cantonese songs are not as good as her Mandarin ones.
I hope you enjoy the songs! I certainly did haha.
Do you think Life After Death deserves a watch? I'm thinking of coming back and watching it since I have some more time right now.

    4. Hi Tacocat,

We just started On-Lie Game, but we haven't pay much attention to Fred's theme song yet, but it sounds very mediocre after the first time listening.

Thanks for the recommended songs! We enjoyed 無得比 as it was very encouraging haha.

Honestly, the beginning of LAD was pretty promising, but from 15 episodes on, it was very draggy and kind of pointless. 20 episodes would have been more than enough for the show. You could watch a bit and see if you want to continue further on or drop it.
