TVB Anniversary Awards 2022 Review 丨萬千星輝頒獎典禮 2022 TVB 回顧
Hello Everyone!
We are here to give our yearly review of this historical night for TVB's Anniversary Awards. The eventful night took place on January 8th, 2023. Our post is a few days later because we had so many thoughts we wanted to share this time.We told ourselves not to expect too much this year due to certain award choices last year (you can check out our post last year). Certain artists tend to be favoured by the company even if they are not the audience's choice. The awards are listed based on the order they were announced. This year, the awards were open to public voting, where audience could cast up to 3 votes each for every category. How much the votes actually influenced the results is a mystery. The Malaysian audience had their own set of voting as well for the 3 Malaysian awards. We will start off with some of our general thoughts on the night's rundown before we dive into each individual award. Finally, we will take a look at the red carpet looks at the end.
Disclaimer: This post contains purely our opinions after watching the show. The information presented is done according to the best of our knowledge. We would like to apologize in advance for any errors or missing information.
SPOILERS AHEAD!
Get On A Flat was the biggest winner of the night, winning 4 awards including Rosita Kwok's, as this show mainly contributed to her win. The Beauty of War, Your Highness, I've Got The Power each won 2 awards. This year, we felt there weren't as many TVB artistes attending the show because only the Top 10 nominees were invited for the red carpet and to sit at the front. Overall, we were satisfied with where most of the awards went to except for a few, but we were less happy with some of the nominees that made it into Top 5 that did not make sense to us. We were impressed by the star-studded guests who presented the awards. Many were faces we haven't seen onscreen for a long time. Eric Tsang admitted that he had to pull strings and individually call up these guests to invite them to the show.
Award Winners
Best Supporting Actor: Eric Tang (鄧智堅) – Get on a Flat (下流上車族)
This award was presented by the Detective Investigation Files partners, Michael Tao and Joey Leung. We have not seen Joey for so long that we couldn't recognize him at first. We have been noticing Eric Tang in recent years even though he played minor characters. Eric’s wealth of experience in theatre has helped him transition into a great actor. He was very convincing playing a part older than himself and we had a good laugh every time he showed up on screen with his dirty appearance with his "Hobbit" family. It was a deserved win, but the competitors in this category were very strong like Henry Lee (Lee Shing-cheong), who was another favourite. We also thought King Lam or Sunny Dai Yiu Ming should have made it into Top 5 perhaps instead of Ricco. One thing we'd like to point out was why this important award was presented so early in the night? Shouldn't all the Most Improved and Variety Show stuff come first?
Best Dressed Male Artiste: Joel Chan (陳山聰)
Joel was pretty much the only male artiste that put more effort into his outfit with his unique taste lol. More on the red carpet opinions to come at the bottom of the award review.
Best Dressed Female Artiste: Hera Chan (陳曉華), Nancy Wu (胡定欣)
Both Hera and Nancy wore a similar style of dress. We wonder how they were tied like did they get the same number of votes?
Best Supporting Actress: Angel Chiang (蔣家旻) –The Beauty of War (美麗戰場)
Actresses, Candice Yu and Cecilia Yip presented this award next. Angel Chiang pretty much had this one in the bag. She didn’t seem as shocked as last time getting Most Improved and delivered her acceptance speech in a poised manner. It was refreshing to watch her play a villain and she went to the extreme of watching her father die in joy. This was one of the roles with the most buzz in media this year. What shocked us was the Top 5 contenders had both Rosita Kwok and Yuki Law over Lenna/Griselda Yeung, Candice Chiu, Winki Lai, and Amy Fan? These girls were cute but not Best Supporting Actress material. Lenna definitely deserves some recognition over her countless roles over the years.
Most Improved Male Artiste: Ricco Ng (吳偉豪) – Come Home Love: Lo & Behold (愛·回家之開心速遞), Communion (回歸)
The Most Improved awards were presented by Dada Chan and Mason Fung. We could see why Ricco was chosen. He has the looks and
potential of becoming a Siu Sang to TVB’s standards. He also had a very different role in Communion that contrasted from the sitcom character. We thought King Lam or Derek Wong both were strong contenders for the award. Both had personal breakthroughs this year with
King’s commendable performance in Get on a Flat or Derek’s transition to
emceeing which actually suits him very well.
Most Improved Female Artiste: Rosita Kwok (郭柏妍) – Freedom Memories (青春不要臉) Stranger Anniversary (雙生陌生人), Big White Duel II (白色強人II), Get on a Flat (下流上車族)
We were a bit concerned that Moon might go home empty-handed again this year after this part. After Moon, we thought Tiffany Lau would be a better pick since she’s had a greater improvement this year compared to the past with a significant role in Freedom Memories and I’ve Got The Power, whereas Rosita’s role in Stranger Anniversary, Big White Duel II was pretty small. It’s Rosita’s first year of acting so we did not see much of an actual “improvement” yet. We know her popularity is soaring which might be why TVB decided to give it to her, but it’s a bit too early in our opinion. Even Yuki's acting seemed better than her, and was surprising that Erica Chan did not make it into Top 5 either. We thought her performances were pretty good this year and deserved at least Top 5.
Best Non-Drama Programme: Super Trio Returns (開心無敵獎門人)
Kent Cheng and Mayanne Mak presented these programme awards. We had predicted this show to win, it was well-received in HK and has shaped HK TV variety shows over the years and touched many generations as they said. Also, this is heavily backed by and created by Eric Tsang. We would have liked to see MangoTV and TVB's Infinity and Beyond in Top 5 because it was our top music show of the year with beautiful new renditions to celebrate Cantopop songs.
Best Information Programme: Big Big Old World II (尋人記Ⅱ)
This was one of the programmes we enjoyed a lot this year. It features Anthony Fong Tung Shing and some of the news team revisting old Sunday New Reports from the 80s and 90s and trying to find particular citizens featured in the interviews. The tireless search may go on for months, but the team perservered until the person is found. It's really interesting to see how people's lives change over a few decades and how they have changed from the past. The acceptance speech was eloquent and one of the best of the night.
Best Annual Programme: TVB Anniversary Gala Show (萬千星輝賀台慶 )
Out of the annual shows this year, we would agree the Anniversary Gala Show was the best to celebrate TVB's 55th birthday. The performances were entertaining, especially the TV Buddy Rhapsody sequence at the beginning of the show which was fun to watch and took a lot of coordination with the company's artistes.
Malaysia's Favourite TVB Actor: Ruco Chan (陳展鵬) –
Ruco's got a large fan base in Malaysia that is backing him for this. It's been a few slow years for Ruco in between 2018-2021 and we could see how tired he looked in Sinister Beings (it's renewed for a 2nd season lol). We were glad to see him back on TV and hope to see more. In his 5 roles this year, this was our favourite one, and we are happy to see him win this for this difficult role. At least got something this year because this might have been our top male roles of 2022, though we knew TVB was favouring Joel for the big win. We would not have complained if he got the Favourite Character Award either.
Malaysia's Favourite TVB Actress: Moon Lau (劉佩玥) –The Beauty of
War (美麗戰場)
We are glad that Moon is finally being recognized after all these years. We always thought her acting was more bearable than many of the Miss HK former contestants that were promoted before her but she lacked the opportunity for greater roles. She is a natural on screen and we really want to see more of her in roles with more depth. Of this show, she definitely was the character we enjoyed seeing over Jeannie.
Malaysia's Favourite TVB Drama: I’ve Got The Power (超能使者)
We tend to agree with the Malaysia award choices like last year. This year, I’ve Got The Power was also one of our top dramas. The Malaysians seem to enjoy Jazz Boon’s productions with both The Righteous Fists and I’ve Got The Power making it into Top 5. We could tell the award has great meaning for the whole cast as Jazz Lam was teary when they went up the stage.
Best Male Host: Anthony Fong Tung Shing (方東昇) – Big Big Old World II (尋人記Ⅱ)
Anthony's win is not only credited to his iconic "golden" phrases but also to the hard work their team put to coordinate the show and searching for their targets. He was not in person to receive the prize, but we look forward to his next project.
Best Female Host: Janis Chan (陳貝兒) – No Poverty Land II - A Treasure Trove (無窮之路II - 無價之保)
This is the 2nd consecutive year Janis won this award. We actually went back to watch the first season we missed last year. While the 1st season was more focused on places of China in poverty, the 2nd season is about preserving wildlife and nature. Both seasons were really tough to film for Janis and the small crew, who took risks like climbing mountains and getting trapped in a sandstorm to provide never-before-seen footage.
TVB Professionalism Award: Karen Chan (陳惠英)
A well-deserved recognition to Karen for her fantastic costumes designed for drama characters or the 31 years of experience coordinating fashion for shows like the Miss HK Paegent. We hope this award will be continued next year.
Most Popular Drama Theme Song: “Wish” by Joey Wong (王灝兒)– Big White Duel II (白色強人II)
Singers, Karen Tong and Winnie Lau presented this award to JW. Our personal pick was Gigi Yim’s theme song for Communion《一水兩方》which we thought was really meaningful and a perfect match for the drama. Other theme songs we thought worthy of the win were Archie Sin and Rock Ho's Forever Young At Heart theme song or Andrew Lam and Aeren Man's Get On A Flat theme song. It did not seem that "Wish" was the most popular as netizens pointed out that the views on the song was less than some of the other nominated songs. We think the song is alright but overplayed in the drama and some of the English lyrics don’t make sense. JW's live performance was not as good and stable as Janees's of Stars Academy 2 and they even cut her to the ads.
Lifetime Achievement Award: Catherine Tsang (曾勵珍)
It's not a TVB Anniversary Award show without thanking 珍姐. But this year, it's Catherine's turn to thank others for working with her and seems as though she was surprised when Eric called her name the Lo & Behold cast came out to celebrate with her. We don't have too to much comment on the award.
Most Popular Female Character: Amy Fan (樊亦敏) as 白天娥/三太 – Come Home Love: Lo & Behold (愛·回家之開心速遞)
Both this and Best Actress was presented by Michael Miu and Felix Wong. Amy as the winner was a surprise for us. We expected Alice Chan to take
home an award this year, but it made sense that she might have not been as
popular as Amy’s role. Amy's signature over-the-top, yet lovable character as 3rd Wife/Mistress has permeated households in Hong Kong and abroad. Lo & Behold once again takes home a major award, not showing any signs of stopping soon.
Best Actress: Elena Kong (江美儀) – Get on a Flat (下流上車族)
We thought Elena, Alice Chan and Nina Paw were all worthy of the award this year. Elena spoke candidly about her struggles and time in the "fridge" after leading Tiger Mom Blues on another show. Elena fully captured the role as a realistic mother of a struggling family who seeks control of her family and desperately wants to own her own property. She had some great emotional and arguing scenes that showed she took this leading role seriously. She said ATV actresses are seen as 2nd tier, when actors are actors and can be good no matter where they come from. ATV actresses have seen great success and were given leading opportunities at TVB, namely Kristal Tin, Alice Chan, Joey Meng, even Nina Paw used to work there.
Most Popular Male Character: Kalok Chow as 紀威 – Your Highness
(痞子殿下)
Kenix Kwok and Ray Lui were the presenters for this and the Best Actor award. We were also a bit surprised with this award. Kalok seemed unprepared to accept this award. We thought that Andrew Lam would have a good chance to win this award since his character was so popular, but in hindsight, the fact that he sat on the audience side for the whole night and reports that the show producers forgot to send him an official invite to the show says a lot. Kalok is the youngest to win this award. It is obvious that TVB has high expectations of pushing Kalok to be the next in line We hope he will surprise us with something new and continue working hard and humbly. We are confused how Tony Hung made it into Top 5 in this category.
Best Actor: Joel Chan (陳山聰) – Barrack O’ Karma 2 (金宵大廈2)
Joel played many roles this year including The Righteous
Fists, Brutally Young 2, Barrack O’ Karma 2, My Pride The Beauty
of War, I’ve Got The Power. It’s no doubt he worked incredibly hard, so we predicted he would have a high chance
this year and aren't too upset that he won. Nowadays, the Best Actor award seems to be something the actors just have to line up for and not really dependent on the role of the drama itself. Like Shaun Tam last year, Joel's role in this drama was good as he had to portray a handful of different characters in the same series, but perhaps not the "best" of the male roles. Nonetheless, most people agreed it was time to give him the encouragement.
Best Series: Get on a Flat (下流上車族)
This was an entertaining part of the night to watch Andrew just go on and on, half dissing and half complimenting his buddy, Eric Tsang. Though it was hilarious, we wished the production crew had more of a chance to share their sentiments because they really were the ones to make the series come into fruition. Another predicted win because of how well the ratings faired with mostly praises for the show. Its major winning factor is the connection and down-to-earth portrayal to HK audience with some humour. Please see our 2022 TVB Dramas Review for more on our thoughts of the drama.
