TVB Anniversary Awards 2023 - Red Carpet Review丨萬千星輝頒獎典禮 2023 紅地氈 TVB 回顧

Hello everyone!

We hope you had a chance to read our previous TVB Anniversary Award thoughts in our post before this one. This is our red carpet review this year at the ceremony in the Grand Lisboa Palace Resort in Macau. There were notably less artists attending this year, mostly the top 10 of each award category only. In many cases, the top 10 for Most Improved, Best Supporting and even Best Actor/Actress were the same. All of the artists arrived by car to the main entrance of the hotel, walking into the lobby to sign their name on the board. They were briefly interviewed at the front after signing their name, then walked around the corner to be interviewed further and have red carpet photos taken by many news outlets. We watched the red carpet stream on YouTube and found it distracting that they had the interview audio for certain artists at the back area with the visual on different artists walking into the lobby. Overall, better signage and instructions would have made for a smoother red carpet event. We have included comments for quite a few artistes below, but unfortunately, we were not able to include all of them as there are too many.

Disclaimer: This post contains purely our opinions after watching the show. The information presented is done according to the best of our knowledge. We would like to apologize in advance for any errors or missing information.

Red Carpet (in no particular order):

Samantha Ko is looking radiant in this silk/satin purple backless dress! Perfectly accessorized with a silver necklace and bracelet, she is in our minds one of the best dressed ladies of the night. It was a smart choice to go with purple, which was not a common colour chosen that night. Winning the Best Supporting Actress award was a cherry on top. Kenneth Ma on the other hand disappointed us with this funny collar. He usually opts for a clean black suit which we wouldn't have minded but the beige/pink collar looks like it was added on last minute. It felt like a cheap costume. He said his wife Roxanne did have a say in choosing the outfit which leads us to wonder what the other options were. It is still surprising to us he won the Best Dressed male artiste of the night and likely more based on popularity than the actual fashion.

The triple TV Queen looked stunning and cheerful at this Awards ceremony, one that she hasn't attended in many years. Her black dress was simple and well fitted with a statement above the bust. Charmaine said they were rushing to get to the venue as her flight just arrived, so we are glad they still managed to put together a beautiful outfit. We thought her jewellery was subtle and matched the dress well. She was one of the few ladies, if not the only, that we spotted with a watch on for the night.

Kelly Fu's dress certainly made a statement, it also caused her to struggle to get out of the car with Tony Hung. However, we like the dress and it accentuates her figure well. The updo is a messy bun, which is contrary to a lot of other ladies with slick straight hair or wavy long hair down. We could see her looking even more elegant letting her hair down too. Our only comment is maybe missing a simple silver necklace. Tony looks fine with the pink suit and black bow tie, nothing too crazy.

Kalok Chow looks handsome as always in this suit. We are wondering about the choice of a loose tie though, and if this was intentional (it must be right?) because it just looks a little sloppy for the suit pattern. This pin striped suit+pant set gives retro vibes. It actually pairs pretty good with Rosina Lam's white dress with big balloon sleeves. Her statement necklace works due to the white canvas on the rest of her body. Overall decent looks from these two My Pet Pet Angel co-stars.

Shaun Tam just looks plain here really, this doesn't do anything for him and looks like a judge's robes or something. No matter though because he was not really a one of the stronger contender for awards this year. Selena Lee looks alright, but a bit on the old fashioned side. We are not sure about the big drape around her because we lose the silhouette of the dress with that. It's nice to see her with long hair after being so used to seeing her with short hair in The Queen of News. Not the best we've seen from either of these two although it would be interesting to see them act in more dramas together.

The loving couple of the night, Aimee and Moses Chan! They both chose black looser fits for their red carpet look. Honestly safe and uninteresting looks from both of them so we don't have too much to comment on. A little bit more on the casual side, especially considering that Moses had high probability of snagging TV King this year which he did in the end. It was just nice to see them support each other at the event.

Stars Academy S1 reps! The three young ladies, Yumi Chung, Windy Zhan, and Chantel Yiu (left to right) have been attending these awards shows for a little while now, and they all look more mature in these dresses. Although the dresses are fine, the platform heels detract a little from the dress and make it bottom heavy. A thin silver stiletto might have looked better and also lengthened their legs more than the chunky platform.

From Hong Kong to Beijing co-stars, Ruco Chan and Jinny Ng looked good! A safe ,yet classy look from both sides. Ruco's suit looks a bit plain and formulaic with the exception of those Chanel pins. Not sure if we are big fans of that, maybe something more meaningful would've told a better story. Jinny looks great and unique in her blue mermaid gown with beading.

Moon is in a silver draped gown which looks good, although not her best we've seen! This reminds us a little of a traditional Indian sari with the design and draping, and it might have actually been more interesting if there was another colour added in. Owen wore a green pin striped suit ensemble paired with a burgundy tie and leather shoes. A clean look from him and more proper than many male artistes that night.

Tiffany looks energetic in this blue number, with a high leg slit and asymmetrical neckline to best show her fit and tall figure. We liked the glitter detail in her hair as well. Joel usually has interesting red carpet choices and this awards show was no exception. This is one of his better looks to date, just a long, black coat and oxford shoes. As a side note, we have seen these 2 collaborate many times from father/daughter to lovers and would love to see them work with other people.

Another loving couple with a simple, safe red carpet choice. The necktie on Edwin Siu's suit is a bit interesting but other than that, all black. Priscilla Wong looks cute with the little wrist cuff detail, but other than that it looks like a good tea party outfit. The belt is definitely not screaming red carpet.

Monica Chan returned to the small screen this past year, and this black and gold dress looks alright. Not much to comment on other than the fact Monica still has such a fit figure and definitely looks younger than her age. On the other hand, with newcomer Yvette Chan, we can see Yvette's briefs underneath the sheer dress. Not our favourite looks of the night by far.

The host of Midlife: Sing & Shine! Stephanie Che Yuen Yuen, along with Chris Lai who directed and hosted a Malaysian variety show this year. This was a smart pairing because Stephanie is quite tall, so looks better to stand beside Chris who is also known to be one of the taller TVB artistes. Another black duo with rather safe choices besides the backless velvet dress from Stephanie.

Mark Ma and Regina Ho from The Queen of News. Regina is carrying some of her wedding bliss over in this bridal inspired lace gown with balloon sleeves. She looks good with the silver jewellery and half up half down hairstyle. Not sure that we remember any of her looks from previous years unfortunately so we can't compare. Mark opted for a black turtleneck base with a loose fitted blue blazer and pants. What we did not understand the need for the grey long overcoat, he could've done without it.

Newcomers Niklas Lam, Rosita Kwok, and Danny Hung. Here we see another loose tie around the nexk which must be one of the newer trends.

Sherman Poon, Felix Lok, Joey Thye all opted for black this year! Many black outfits this awards ceremony! A slight variation for Sherman with the large pink bow on the side and a play on materials with a leather bustier top and what looks to be velvet skirt. Whereas Joey's dress is a bit plain in our opinion.

The worst dressed of the night goes to these two unfortunately, in our opinion. We are not sure what their stylists were thinking, maybe they wanted to try something unique that did not turn out well. The entire outfit from head to toe is an incoherent mess. Gigi's long white buttoned shirt was a weird combo of a lab coat and veil? The brooch on her collar was odd and did not fit the look. The most intriguing was the flamingo looking tights and ruffled asymmetrical skirt. The black stilettos with the pom pom at the front was also a weird choice. Instead, the dress Gigi changed into later that night for her performances was beautiful on her! On the other hand, JW wore a black long-sleeved gown with sheer cutouts that did not flatter her body at all. We were excited to see them walk the red carpet, but were sadly disappointed.

Matthew and Sisley looked alright, another black dressed couple (although Matthew is more grey). Our only comment for Sisley's dress is that the strapless part for the bust was a bit big and "in the way"? This is not evident in this photo but in the livestream video, you could see that it was not proportionate to the rest of the dress. Not much to comment about in terms of Matthew's red carpet outfit, he looks fine and handsome in it.

Joman and Jonathan walked down the red carpet with some more sparkly numbers. She wore a fitted blue gown with a long train and a bit of flare at the bottom. It had some ruffle detail throughout the dress from the shoulder area down to the hips, although we will say that Jinny's blue gown was better. Jonathan had a sequined suit on with a matching black bow tie, a cute choice!

What an interesting choice from Maria Cordero with the orange and yellow cape on top of a sequined gown. She definitely stood out here, and the cape was as loud and powerful as her voice! She is accompanied by newcomer Kayan Yau. She looked pretty and young in the blush beaded gown which had a romantic/fantasy feel to it.

Hostesses, Toby Chan and Mayanne Mak, looked good in their gowns. Toby accentuated her figure in this deep-V sequined navy blue dress with a high leg slit. She has definitely matured beautifully over the years, especially with this updo. Mayanne wore a red and black asymmetrical gown which looked alright but definitely not very fancy. The top resembled a rose, while the bottom was just a black skirt commanding attention to the top.

The Scoop Team! The team here all look great in their fits, all the ladies chose quite standard gowns with the exception of one of the interviewers of the night in an oversized white blazer and white pants. There is "One Dollar Joe" here alongside the ladies, a shame that he was sidelined in some of the interview videos and snippets that we saw.

Kwan Gor had many compliments on his cool, trendy look here that gave people a breath of fresh air! He opted for a silky silver suit jacket paired with a silver brooch and necklace. What really stood out were his purple shades and hairstyle. Venus on the other hand looked youthful and radiant in her floral applique white/nude gown which we liked. Nothing too crazy here, no necklace or bracelet for her but nice earrings that fit the floral theme.

Lastly we have some members of the Asia Super Young idol talent show currently on air. There are some HK / TVB faces here including Karl Ting, Archie Sin and Hugo Wong. We have been following this show so it was nice to see them get an opportunity to perform. Most of the contestants wore a variation of a white suit with some exceptions with Sean Wen in black or and the other Hugo Wong in a pink suit... not sure if they had a different stylists or did not get the memo since they did not get to perform  onstage that night along the other brothers in white suites. All in all, an exciting new group of talent here.

Thank you for tuning in to this year's Anniversary Awards red carpet review! We were happy to see some new and old faces here in a brand new venue. Looking forward to watching some more dramas this year and see these folks continue refining their art!

Until next time,
- CeeJay

  1. Hello! It's been a while since I've checked out your blog (you may have seen some of my long rants) and I didn't see any new posts, but I've "finished" Forensic Heroes 6 and wanted to share my thoughts.
    (spoilers below)

When I saw that it was getting a 6th series with the same 3 main cast I was surprised, but not really since TVB reuses actors all the time. But what I was really surprised by was that they kept the same characters from the last one, which was really a bad move on their part especially considering how it ended in 5 and how they completely messed up the characters this time. I didn't really expect them to follow up on the last series much, but putting something as big as Bosco's character turning into a villain at the end, then pretending it didn't exist at all left a really sore spot.

I don't get the decision to cram so many cases in a 24 episode series. The thing I liked about the FH series is how each case gets its time to shine and the suspects, victims and storyline get to develop over the course of a few episodes. Doing one case every 2 episodes is doable, but the way the show does it just doesn't work at all. There's so much fluff, entire scenes are very skippable and you will still understand what's going on. And the end is almost always very rushed, there were a few times I went "huh?" and thought I missed something because they skip to someone being arrested/the character we were rooting for being released, but apparently I hadn't because the characters sum up the plot/case for you. It feels like they started writing thinking they wouldn't fill enough time but near the end realised they didn't actually have enough time and wrote something hastily to end the case.

The characters: it took me a while to actually remember them because it'd been like 2 years since I last saw FH5, but after I did, they just felt so different to me. The 3 main leads are not the 3 main leads, instead they're basically replaced by the 3 new people who sit around in a coffee shop/laundromat and discuss the case (why). TVB wants to promote new actors, sure, but doing so in such a blatant way is really grating to watch. We barely know the characters, and instead of letting us getting to know the characters, they have them discuss the case (basically exposition machines), and they don't particularly have a good dynamic either. After a while, every time they switch to that coffee shop/laundromat I just skipped the scenes. And on that complaint, it seems like TVB either has no budget or is really cheap because why are police/forensic officers discussing cases in a public place like a coffee shop? And do they really have that many clothes to wash because they don't have to visit the laundromat as much as they are doing.
I feel really bad for 3 bootleg leads because this is probably (for some) their biggest role to date and this is what they had to work with.

    1. On Jacky Bosco and Benjamin (spoiler warning): I praised their dynamic last series, but it seems like the show has something against all three of them this series. All their sideplots make no sense/take up way too much time. Also, they barely interact at all especially at the start. After 10 episodes, aside from "discovering the suspect+initial crime scene investigation" I could only think of 2 scenes where all 3 were in the same room together. How do you have 3 leads who barely interact at all?

Jacky's thing with her PTSD/dead stalker came up again, and of all the things they could've brought forward from FH5, that was what they chose? I liked the storyline but having it again now seems very repetitive, and doing the whole lookalike thing makes her seem very delusional (if it was intentional, which i suspect it was, it's not done very well because it doesn't try to make her seem sympathetic at all). Near the end of the series the lookalike gets killed and she's suspected of it because PTSD/blackout things. Ridiculousness of the plot aside (the love triangle), I genuinely enjoyed the case. It was pretty suspenseful, had good acting, focus on the 3 leads (AND MORE IMPORTANTLY, NO COFFEE SHOP/LAUNDROMAT SCENES). I particularly enjoyed the scene where Bosco talks to Jacky in jail, begging her to tell him what happened but she can't because she doesn't remember and she tells him sadly that she's thought about it and is fine with the outcome no matter what it is and asks him whether he can accept it like she will. It was a brilliant piece of acting by both, and a nice show of vulnerability from the usually stiff/dry Bosco and the calm/collected Jacky.
On Bosco, I hate his storyline. The fact that his love interest from FH5 immediately got kidnapped feels so ridiculous, because this means he spends the entire series flying back and forth to Japan to find her. I wasn't invested in their love story last series and I'm not really invested now, so the entire plotline feels like a distraction from actually solving cases for him. His second subplot is befriending Nana, whose dynamic with him I find amusing. Nana is sometimes annoying, but Bosco's indifferent personality contrasted with her anxiety/annoyance makes a very entertaining watch. I wouldn't be surprised if she was only there for comedic purposes because that seems to be the case.
On Benjamin, I'm so confused. He had one dinner with his subordinate's family and right after he dies he... takes them in to live in his house? And he acts like a father to her son...? It feels like there's a lot of context missing there. Was he her son's godfather or close to the family? Because it doesn't feel like he is, and he spends the entire series taking care of them as a subplot. It also has zero relation to the main plots so it just feels like they ran out of ideas.

The finale: HUH????? I feel like the show's not Forensic Heroes 6 anymore, it's Lost and Found 6 because there was zero forensics, only Bosco's subplot #1. It was a waste of time, they should've resolved this plot way earlier and had that second last case as the last case because they could've ended the show there and it would've made perfect sense. Benjamin is barely in the episode and Jacky doesn't even appear. (and neither do the bootleg leads, or if they did I forgot)

Overall, this show is way worse than FH5, but I'd still rate it above FH4 because it does have some redeeming qualities aside from the things I've already mentioned. The soundtrack is something I'd like to mention in particular, compared to the usual TVB dramas, I really enjoyed the main theme (the one by the orchestra), it gives off a very investigative and somewhat heroic feeling. I was surprised to see that Jacky Cai sang the english song, I heard it in the credits and thought it was pretty nice, but I don't really remember the last one.

    2. Hello! Welcome back to our blog and thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts with us about Forensic Heroes 6!! We have been taking some time off and just recently got the time to finish the series.

We were unfortunately let down by this 6th installment. We agree that the laundromat/coffee shop scenes were ridiculous. Why were they discussing the cases and suspects so openly in the public? The worst part was that each episode had several of these scenes like the characters were washing a lot of clothes on a daily basis. This really stalled any momentum with the cases because instead of the teams actually going out to investigate, all we get to see is the 3 of them talk about what their findings were after the fact.

You're totally right about the fact the whole subplot in Japan with Po Ying (Venus Wong) which had nothing to do with forensic science. It became pretty obvious to us by the middle of the show that it was Kwan Gor who was behind the case. When Bosco uncovered some secrets of how Po Ying's old classmates in university also went missing in the past at different periods of time and how there was this guy with a mask who was the villain, we thought that there would be connection to her being kidnapped. But unless we missed it, there was no explanation about the connection to these events at all during the finale, and the only apparent reason was because Kwan Gor's character loved Po Ying.

Benjamin's story is kind of sad after how people around him keep leaving him. We thought it was sudden how his subordinate played by Mark Ma passed away. With the warm moments between Ben, Kelly, and her son, we found ourselves rooting for them to get together in the end, but unfortunately Kelly decided to leave too. We thought Kelly's acting has improved quite a bit especially those gut-wrenching crying scenes when she loses her husband.

Most of the cases were quite boring and unmemorable to us. Jacky's story was pretty predictable although entertaining nonetheless. Nana played by Joman was a refreshing character. It would have been nice to see more scenes with the trio (Bosco, Jacky, Ben) because they definitely had their comedic moments when they hung out at the bar together. We liked the main theme song sung by Felix Lam as well, and Jacky's song was perfect for some scenes.

Thanks again for your comment! Are you planning on watching the anniversary dramas this year?
