Happy 2025 to all of you! We are glad to be back with our full review of TVB's 2024 Anniversary Awards, also known as TVB Awards Presentation 2024! The grandest TVB night of the year took place on Sunday, January 19th, 2025 at Grand Lisboa Palace Resort Macau to celebrate the broadcasting company's achievements. Here are our thoughts on the award show. Don't forget to check out the red carpet looks at the end of this post!

Overall ThoughtsThere were some major upsets and unexpected winners this year, garnering even more media attention than usual. We believe this is partly due to the fact there were fewer TVB crafted dramas that aired this year because many Mainland Chinese dramas took the 9:30 pm to 10:30 pm slot throughout the year. They continued with the tradition of the one person host for the whole show which was started a couple years ago. This year, Rachel Chan was chosen to be the host, and she has been getting lots of emceeing opportunities lately. Edmond Hui helped to provide narration for nominees and winners in the background as well. The theme for tonight's award show was "Who's Next?". This is the second year in a row they held the awards presentation in Grand Lisboa Palace Resort, and it definitely feels like a more luxurious venue than the usual TVB City "Studio 1". The red carpet fashion this year was mostly a letdown for us. Most gowns and suits were forgettable and safe. Black and white seemed to be the popular colors this year too. The award winners came mostly from these three dramas of 2024: No Room For Crime (反黑英雄) for 5 awards, Big Biz Duel (企業強人) for 3 awards, and Darkside of the Moon (黑色月光) for 2 awards. No Room For Crime (反黑英雄) was hence the biggest winner of the night, though it came as a huge surprise for many of the audience which we will talk about more later. Eric Tsang stated that each award allocation was decided 100% based on the number of votes received by the audience and staff, but some of the results do make us wonder the validity of this. Overall, the show was quite long and winners kept getting signaled to finish their speeches because they were running overtime maybe because there were too many awards to give out.
There were a lot of familiar faces this night with many respected award presenters. Here are the ones who made an appearance:
Award Winners
Greater Bay Area's Favorite TVB Variety Show and Information Program 大灣區最喜愛TVB綜藝及資訊節目: No Poverty Land IV - One Belt One Road《無窮之路IV:「一帶一路」》
This was a well-deserved award because the No Poverty Land documentary series is one we have watched since the first season. The program is always informative and profound, and this time, Janis Chan and her crew takes us out of China to countries that have been impacted by the Belt Road Initiative, including United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Greece, Egypt, Kenya, and Madagascar. It is not surprising to see that this is Greater Bay Area's favorite information show.
Greater Bay Area's Favorite TVB Actress 大灣區最喜愛TVB女主角: Tavia Yeung (楊茜堯) -Darkside of the Moon《黑色月光》
We agree with the results here. It was great to see Tavia back on the small screen with a role designed her her. It's disappointing to see that this was the only award Tavia ended up getting for the night because she deserved more. In our opinion, Tavia definitely showcased the strongest acting out of all the female contenders, so it's a shame that was not seemingly the sole consideration for TVB as she could not win the Best Actress award. That aside, she was sparkling literally and figuratively in this shimmery black pantsuit.
Up until now, we were satisfied with the results. When they announced Kenneth, we thought that this must be the biggest joke ever. Like deja vu, once again Kenneth showed his classic dumbfounded, expressionless face. It seems like year after year Kenneth always gets something at the awards, even if he might not deserve it. He might as well not even act anymore and he will still get an award somehow. We thought The Airport Diary was one of the weakest shows of the year that we couldn't get past a couple episodes, even though it was only 10 episodes long. It was really mostly promotion for the airport. We couldn't really see where there was much acting needed for the role, so it's a shock to us. The fact that so many of the top 10 nominees came from this airport show that aired at the beginning of last year tells us that the dramas this year were just mostly subpar. We truly feel bad when the award could have gone to someone more worthy.
This was hilarious because we thought Moses was quite the opposite of best dressed this year...his wig/hair situation was interesting and a bit hard to get past haha.
After we watched the red carpet event, we did not have much recollection of what Venus even wore, and when they presented the award, she was wearing another gown that was black. Now looking back, we did like her giant pink dress which was refreshing from all the black and white dresses most ladies chose that night.
Most Improved Male Artiste 飛躍進步男藝員: Nicholas Yuen (阮浩棕) - ICAC Investigators 2024《廉政行動2024》、Call of Destiny《異空感應》、From Shenzhen To Zhongshan《玩轉深中懶人包》、Clash Of Home Chefs《家常便飯爭霸戰》
The award presenters were actors, Waise Lee and Roy Cheung. We first noticed Nicholas a few years ago when he started getting small supporting roles and began to pay attention to him after hearing he was Lily Leung's grandson. Undoubtedly, he is one of the upcoming actors that TVB will to promote to become a male lead This year, his performances had not been very memorable to us until Call of Destiny aired near the end of 2024. His role as Duncan completely changed our minds as he proved his ability with the gut-wrenching delivery of a tragic character. Duncan was a very complex character to handle, not only because of the layers of this character but also because his screentime was so heavy, so to us he felt like one of the main characters. We are looking forward to seeing him take on new opportunities in the future.
Most Improved Female Artiste 飛躍進步女藝員: Hera Chan (陳曉華)- No Return《巾幗梟雄之懸崖》、Call of Destiny《異空感應》、From Shenzhen To Zhongshan《玩轉深中懶人包》
Best Actress in a Supporting Role 最佳女配角: Kelly Fu (傅嘉莉) - No Room For Crime《反黑英雄》
Malaysia's Favorite TVB Variety Show and Information Program
This game show seems to win awards every year. We hope there can be some new variety shows in the future.
We fully understand that TVB really wants to push Owen Cheung to replace some of the older leading actors, so we were alright with him getting this award as a form of encouragement. What we did NOT understand was how he also received Best Actor at the same time. We will talk more about the Best Actor award below.
Kelly has slowly but surely made her way to the top at TVB through the last few years, mostly due to her roles in the Marco Law's "强人" productions as she said in her speech too. Her acting has never been very impressive to us, but we normally find it tolerable and don't mind it much. She has definitely made improvements with each role. As an artist, she is mostly unproblematic, elegant, and polite which is what TVB always prefers in their leading ladies. Let's see if she is able to take on more challenging roles in the future.
After success of the first season, the show continued to gain a lot of publicity with allowing midlife contestants from all backgrounds enter the competition. This season, there were a lot of experienced competitors, many of which were professional singers in the past. In the end, German Ku won first place. Many great performances will be remembered from this season.
A well-deserved award given in good timing after the Paris Olympics 2024 to recognize the efforts, research, and dedication of the sports team being present in so many sports events and always providing accurate information with lively commentators.
We were not particularly surprised with this either. Aska has been favoured by TVB executives almost from the start. He has been recently getting more chances to participate in dramas and variety shows, and we can foresee that to be his main focus in the future instead of being a full time singer which might have been his intiial goal coming out of Stars Academy singing competition. We know Aska's career will soar smoothly as long as he keeps being the humble and well-mannered artist he is.
Rachel is being groomed to become the next Mayanne Mak with her talkative personality. She has made some improvements this year especially in hosting, but we did see quite a few comments complaining that her voice is loud and annoying. Many have mentioned that she was not able to effectively hold her ground as the only emcee the same way Jarvis did a couple years ago.
Best Female Host 最佳女主持: Janis Chan (陳貝兒): Miss Hong Kong Pageant 2024 《2024香港小姐競選決賽》、Mainland Olympians Gala Show《奧運健兒大匯演》、No Poverty Land IV - One Belt One Road《無窮之路IV:「一帶一路」》、TVB Anniversary Gala Show《萬千星輝賀台慶》
This is Janis's third time winning this title, easily making her the one of the top hosts at TVB. Not only has she continued to share unique stories in the No Poverty Land documentary series, she has been making many hosting appearances for TVB's big shows like the Anniversary Gala.
Best Actor in a Leading Role 最佳男主角: Owen Cheung (張振朗) - No Room For Crime《反黑英雄》
This award was presented by Wayne Lai and Gallen Lo - both have won TVB Best Actor three times. It was funny seeing Wayne present the award and being nominated in the top 5 at the same time. Once again, we were pretty surprised to see Owen win a second time. In No Room For Crime, Owen was kind of the second male lead after Joel Chan and the screentime was shared between him, Joel and Benjamin Yuen. He did well enough in the role, but was it enough to sweep two major awards, especially with his screentime divided among three male actors? We are not too convinced. Even if Owen had to win this award to help push TVB executives' agenda, we felt it would be more understandable if the Malaysia's Favorite TVB Actor went to someone else. To be honest, Owen seemed to be the weaker contestant out of the top 5 in here. Our pick would have probably been Him Law for Best Actor because of his difficult role in Happy Ever After?, and we have never seen him play this type of role. His acting has matured quite a lot, using subtle expressions to deliver emotions. We see a lot of comments online expressing the same sentiment, but of course, Him does not have a contract with TVB, while Owen represents a future hope for the station. Needless to say, we are disappointed that he got two awards, but all we can do hope this award will motivate him to stay humble and continue learning more.
Best Actress in a Leading Role
Best Drama Series 最佳劇集: No Room For Crime《反黑英雄》
This also came as a final surprise to us, first with Donnie Yen appearing to present the award, then with No Room For Crime winning. No Room For Crime was a pretty typical police drama to us. Apparently, it was the highest-rated TVB owned drama in 2024. They did mention that this drama was put on the Tencent platform, so maybe that had an impact on this outcome. The drama was mainly dragged down by the female leads, Rebecca Zhu and Elaine Yiu, and the plotline was similar to previous TVB crime series. We can barely remember some of the cases that happened in the show anymore. This is why we are still trying to process how the show won a total of 5 awards tonight. Our favorite drama series of the 2024 year were Darkside of the Moon and Happy Ever After? We had never seen a TVB drama touch on the subject of marriage the same way Happy Ever After? did and we thoroughly enjoyed the different perspectives of each character and how each transition could change how audience perceived the story. While it was a risk and suited for mature audiences, we would like to see more of these types of unique dramas in the future. If they wanted to choose a series catered towards the general audience, we feel that Darkside of the Moon would have been the better choice, but perhaps it lost due to its less promising viewership ratings. All in all, another big disappointment for us.
