2017 TVB Theme/Sub-theme/Ending-theme Song Top Ten Favourites
Hello!
In 2015, we posted a TVB theme song review which had our thoughts for all the main theme songs of the dramas that were aired that year. This year, to change things up a bit, we decided to include all themes, sub-themes and ending themes, but since there would be too many to give comments on each, we decided to list our 10 favourite songs from the 2017 TVB dramas. We did not do a ranking for them since we had a difficult time choosing our favourite one, but here are the 10 songs in no particular order:
胡鴻鈞 Hubert Wu - 到此一遊 (劇集 "降魔的" The Exorcist's Meter 主題曲): We've always been a fan of Hubert and thought he was one of the better singers in Voice Entertainment. Compared to last year, Hubert didn't get too many theme songs to sing. However, his theme song and sub-theme for The Exorcist's Meter were huge hits, paired with his popular character in the drama as 石敢當. He did a very good job for the live performance of this song in the JSG Awards. This song is catchy, and though we are more accustomed to his slow songs, we do really enjoy this fast song. It also reminds us of his song for Blue Viens, 天地不容, which was also a great ending theme in 2016. After watching the horrible female version of 到此一遊 released by Voice Ent., we immediately went back to Hubert's original version to cleanse our ears.
譚嘉儀 Kayee Tam - 陪著你走 (劇集 "不懂撒嬌的女人" My Unfair Lady 插曲) : Though this was a sub-theme, it was very popular -over the main and ending theme- when My Unfair Lady aired. This is an excellent rendition of the original oldie sung by Lowell Lo. Of course, we like the duet version sung with Vincent Wong better, but it is not officially a theme for the drama since it was released after the drama's huge popularity. We really like Kayee's voice and think she should get more opportunities.
菊梓喬 Hana Kuk - 手中沙 (劇集 "不懂撒嬌的女人" My Unfair Lady 片尾曲): All of the My Unfair Lady songs made it to our top ten (as you'll see later with the main theme). This ending theme is the song when we began to pay more attention to Hana. It's a soothing song which when played, brings back memories of the drama - one of the key purposes of a theme song.
菊梓喬 Hana Kuk - 忘記我自己 (劇集 "使徒行者2" Line Walker: The Prelude 片尾曲): After Hana left us with a strong impression from her song in My Unfair Lady, she returned to sing the ending theme of Line Walker: The Prelude. We love this song and it perfectly captures the feelings and mood of the drama with her strong, powerful voice. We hope to see her improve in her live performances.
胡鴻鈞 Hubert Wu - 遙不可及 (劇集 "降魔的" The Exorcist's Meter 片尾曲): This slow sub-theme showcases Hubert's ability to sing fast and slow songs and expressing feelings in each of his songs. We like the duet version he posted with Ram Chiang as it adds a different feel. The video of the duet is below the original song..
林欣彤 Mag Lam - 畢業之後 (劇集 "老表,畢業喇!" Oh My Grad 主題曲): It's been a while since we've heard Mag on TV since she's sung only a few theme songs here and there. Mag's soft vocals plus the amazing guitar in the background makes this a simple, but refreshing song. It's relaxing to listen to and has very positive lyrics, and we are sure it complements Oh My Grad very well, even though we didn't watch it.
吳若希 Jinny Ng - 別再記起 (劇集 "誇世代" My Ages Apart 片尾曲): Jinny made her comeback in the music industry after having her baby late this year. Initially, we didn't really buy into her songs like the sub-theme for The Exorcist's Meter. However, this ending theme for My Ages Apart reminded us of why she's been so popular in the past recent years. Even though we were never huge fans of Jinny, she really expresses good emotion and we think it pairs very well with Mike and Paris's storyline in My Ages Apart - in fact, their story was the reason we started paying attention to the song. This song also works well as a single, standalone piece even if it is not associated with the drama.
蕭正楠 Edwin Siu - 不變的愛 (劇集 "親親我好媽" Tiger Mom Blues主題曲): As you may have noticed, we have had few male songs this year that we really enjoyed in comparison to female songs. It's no surprise that Edwin's song makes it to our top ten since he has an awesome voice. Like Mag's song, this is very warm-feeling which is perfect for these family type dramas. We also appreciate the good meaning behind the lyrics. We hope he sings more theme songs for upcoming dramas!
谷微 Vivian Koo - 安守本份 (劇集 "使徒行者2" Line Walker: The Prelude 插曲): Vivian Koo's first language is Mandarin, so we applaud her for singing in Cantonese. Her Canto has improved vastly since entering the competition 超级巨声4. This is one of those songs where if you listen to it plenty of times, you can get brainwashed, and since it played several times in Line Walker: The Prelude, we have grown to like it as well.
何雁詩 Stephanie Ho - 我不會撒嬌 (劇集 "不懂撒嬌的女人" My Unfair Lady 主題曲): As promised, here is the last song from My Unfair Lady. It is a good reflection of Mall Jeh's character in the series. Our only complaint is that the song is a bit short :). Stephanie usually does well with various kinds of theme songs, especially sad songs. She should work on improving her live singing as well, since there is quite a disparity from the original when we hear her on stage.
