The Stunt 特技人 - TVB Theme Songs Review

Hello!

We've just listened to the two songs for The Stunt that will be airing on TVB. 

We are looking forward to watching this drama because stunt performers are an important part of TV/film production and often neglected. Watching some promo clips for this drama gave us a very different feel to the filming of it, so we'll see how it turns out. This drama has a new cast as well with Shaun Tam and Rebecca Zhu as the leading lady for the first time. Nice to see Kelvin Kwan participate in this as well since we last saw him in HKTV's Musical drama, Once Upon a Song and thought he did pretty well. Enough talk about the drama, we'll get to the songs.

The theme song is sung by Fred and we expected him to sing it based on the theme of the drama. His voice is suited for a more powerful theme song compared to Hubert. The song is called 'Belief', it's about how there's a lot of obstacles and hardships that you'll encounter but if you believe and aren't afraid of stepping up to the challenge you will be able to become more resilient. Further along the lyrics are more about how the road is not easy and sticking with your goals will get you there. It's a good theme highlighting the hard work that goes unmentioned for stunt performers. 

The song is pretty good and standard as TVB theme songs go but no complaints from us. It would have been nice for Kelvin to sing the song too, or have another sub-theme since he is a singer to begin with.

The sub-theme song Lonely is in English sung by Kayee. There's been more songs for Kayee lately and it's great she's finally getting some more exposure after waiting for since competing in The Voice back in 2013. It's definitely different hearing the Voice Ent. do an English song, the last one we liked was Can You See also by Kayee. The lyrics for this song aren't super beautiful and they're pretty simple actually. While the descriptions are nice about the train rumbling past and such, within 2 line they switched from the morning to the evening so quickly, the storytelling element was missing. But maybe we're just glad they didn't get any grammar wrong, so we didn't expect much. We thought her pronunciation was pretty good for the most part. The singing is quite good though and she's got a strong voice as well compared to Hana who's voice is lighter.

It's getting harder to come by songs that aren't written for dramas in Hong Kong. It doesn't help diversify the music that cantopop listeners get exposed to so we have shifted to other sources of music for many years now. As far as English songs go in Hong Kong, we know AGA writes most of her demos in English and then works with a lyricist to add Cantonese lyrics. However, we know that Kayee writes her own Cantonese lyrics based on her other original songs. As we've said before it's always nice to see singers write their own songs.
